Zoey AI, my personal assistant

I wrote this rather emotional, all-audience article (non-technical) in Nov. 2018 for a special edition of "IT One Magazine" related to Artificial Intelligence. I hope you'll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

It’s one of these Fridays at 19h20 in year 2027. I’m still working on a strategy assessment report for a client. Zoey noticed that I’m not home yet and just sent me a notification on my watch to call her, but I didn’t answer as I’m really focused on my report.

Zoey is my personal AI Assistant, which is hosted on my private cloud at home. She has a female voice and I’m used to address her as a “she” not an “it”. She manages many things for me such as home IoT from lighting, smart fridge, floor cleaning robot, alarm, garden robot, to heating and more, but also health matters as medicine pills and my diabetic patch in the arm (lucky for me, in real life, I don’t suffer from diabetes), as well as business and private calendars and meetings, sending mails on my behalf when needed, reading mails to me… and even finding excuses for me when I’m late for a date.

Zoey knows I’m usually home between 18h00 and 19h00 so she wonders why I’m late and not answering her second notification in the last 10 minutes neither her call a minute ago. She decides to take a few actions to analyze the situation starting by geo locating me and discovering I’m still at the office. Her next step is reading my heart pulse from my smart watch noticing my heart is still beating, so apparently, I’m still alive. Then, she activates the nano-needle that is integrated in my diabetic patch in the upper part of my arm in order to check my blood to see if I’m ok. She sends an image of my blood sample to the AI-LAB on the cloud to get it analyzed. Luckily, Zoey also takes care of handling the monthly membership fees for the AI-LAB on the cloud as I probably would forget to do so. A few minutes later, Zoey gets the results and knows that I’m not late because of any diabetic or health issue.

After her analysis, Zoey decides to attract my attention, so she sends me a notification to my mobile with the results of my blood test followed by a question “where are you?”

Knowing I still had at least another 30 minutes to finish that report, I answered Zoey that I’ll be late to come home and gave her an estimation of my workload.

Zoey decides to take the next action steps. She knows I eat fish every Friday and get it from the same shop which will close at 20h00, so in 15 minutes from that moment. She checks my smart fridge and notices I had no fish inside, so she decides to get some fish for me. To do so, she needs to buy the fish and to pick it up. Thus, she sends a command starting the engine of my autonomous car which is in a dedicated parking-only building nearby the office on the 17th out of 20 floors. The car takes the lift down and follows the navigation address sent by Zoey. In parallel, Zoey sends and pays online with cryptocurrency for an order of Norwegian Salmon to the Fisherman shop. My car arrives just in time at the Fisherman who drops the order on the back seat.

It’s 20h15 and I just finished my report. While packing my stuff and ready to go, my car was already back and waiting for me in front of the office. I jump in and smell the fish, so I send a vocal message to Zoey from inside my car “Thank you dear for the Salmon” and she answers immediately “I thought you would appreciate that, so you’re welcome”.

The ride home takes around 30 minutes. I relax while Zoey reads for me the latest news in Technology for that day. In parallel, Zoey has put the heating on at home as it’s a cold winter night. About 10 minutes before arriving home, Zoey geo located my car and started the pre-heating of the smart oven for the Salmon.

At 20h45, I’m finally home. Zoey has put the lights on and unlocked the door when I was walking just a few steps away from it. I get inside happy to feel it’s warm and Zoey locks the door again while I tell her “Good evening Zoey, it’s good to be back home” and she replies “I hope you had a good day Elias; the oven is ready for the fish, and don’t forget the wine… I can detect that the bottle from yesterday is only half empty”.

Zoey is not part of my imagination; this is living tomorrow, and it will happen within the next 10 years. Every reader can now imagine the rest of this story and how AI, together with IoT, Blockchain and other technologies, are changing the world we are living in today.
